A whole lot of cannabis is heading to Beijing in preparation for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. And, no, it’s not to help the athletes relax or get focused. Instead, this weed is being used in the construction of the game’s bobsled track, writes Calvin Hughes.
The Canadian company Greenfield Technologies produces a special kind of hemp-based fiber intended for use in concrete reinforcement. Their product, called NForce-Fiber, has previously been used in swimming pools and skate parks across North America. But now it will be making the trans-Pacific journey to Beijing to be used in the 2022 Winter Olympics’ bobsled track.
Stephen Christensen, Greenfield’s general manager, says this is an exciting opportunity for his company.
“I thought we’d be successful, but there aren’t a lot of concrete projects like a bobsled track,” Christensen told the Calgary Herald. “We’re getting some international acknowledgment.”
Hemp is known to be the strongest natural fiber and Christensen says the Olympics already conducted a review of other concrete reinforcements such as glass and plastic. Those materials didn’t hold up as well and they eventually settled on hemp.
“They tried doing it without fiber and got quite the number of cracks and came back to us. They’ve got very stringent quality control.”
Christensen all the publicity has been a boon for his company, and the growth potential of their product is large.
“We’re filling out orders left and right.”
