The Michigan Parole Board will submit its decision to Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who can grant Thompson clemency.
Michael Thompson, who was caught selling three pounds of pot to an undercover police informant in 1994, has been incarcerated since 1996. Under the terms of his sentence, he is eligible for parole in April, 2038.
But earlier this week, Thompson was granted a public hearing with the Michigan Parole Board, something that Sarah Gersten, executive director and general counsel for the Last Prisoner Project, called “the last procedural hurdle before the Governor can grant clemency.”
