Georgia teen suffered fatal injuries when he was shot once after running off.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia is investigating an incident in which a 17-year-old youth was fatally shot shortly after a reported dispute over US$40 worth of weed.
Deputies found the unresponsive body of Lester Denison near a wooded area on Fender Rd. in Jesup, Ga. when they responded to a report of at least one shot being fired around 10 p.m. on Dec. 15, according to WJCL.
Sheriff John Carter said that witnesses at the scene reported that a fight had taken place over cannabis, WJCL reports. According to WTOC, witnesses told investigating deputies that the money was owed for the marijuana.
It is reported that shortly after Lester and others ran off, an unspecified number of gunshots rang out. The teenager was struck once, causing fatal injuries.
Recreational cannabis is illegal in Georgia. “Possession of more than one ounce (28 grams) of marijuana is a felony in Georgia, punishable by one to 10 years in prison,” according to FindLaw.
Investigations by the sheriff’s office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are continuing.
The Gun Memorial website now includes Denison’s name, noting he has been “lost to gun violence.” His name is also now up on Gun Violence Archive.
This is not the first time cannabis has sparked a dispute over a small amount of money that proved deadly. Last year in Kansas City, Mo., according toWPSD that a 51-year-old man was fatally shot and his wife wounded in a dispute over a US$5 difference in the price of marijuana. And three years ago in Newark, N.J., two men opened fire on each other following an argument over the selling price for weed, N.J.com reported.
